Big Daddy Kingy – Soul Deep
DJ Kingy has been djing for quite a few years. Born to a soundtrack of Soul, thanks to his Dad’s love of Black music, the first album he heard was Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On in 1971, released a few months before he was born.
Being immersed in a house where it was ‘Soul or Nothing’, he accompanied his Dad as he djed, before making his own debut at a school disco for the blind in 1981. This was long before his Technics 1200 decks were eventually acquired, but he was already buying records with pocket & paper money, from which mixtapes were made & shared.
Evolving from soul, when Kingy first heard Hip Hop he was addicted & US imports, as well as UK Electro lps were bought, that often reflected the breakbeats found in his Dad’s record collection.
Following earlier DJ spots at Bolton West Indian Centre & private parties, things stepped up when Kingy was approached by DJ BaseZone to join him in 1991 at various venues in the Bury & Bolton area, before quickly expanding to Manchester venues such as the BarKay, The Limit & more with the addition of DJ Matt Blakk – collectively known as the Nu-Alliance – they held a well-regarded residency at Oldham’s Kittymans Nightclub. At this time, he also hosted a Friday night show on Manchester’s Sunset 102 radio, following earlier spots on pirate stations including Love Energy & now travelling to dj at university events in London, as well as playing at Blues parties in Manchester’s Moss Side.
